Harnessing The Power Of Your Cyclic Nature In Business
September 1, 2022
Did you know that we, as women, can really harness the power of our menstrual cycle as a blueprint for creativity and power in creating a business that works with our cyclical nature? This is what we’ll be exploring today.
But first, I’d like for you to reflect on your own experience and ask yourself:
What do you know about your menstrual cycle?
How was your initiation into womanhood?
I know for myself and most of the women I have coached, there wasn’t one. It was a taboo topic that wasn’t explored much deeper than how to ‘deal with it’ and hide it away as if it doesn’t exist.
In this blog, I am going to be teaching you how to break away from the paradigm of masculine driven business, which is doing the same thing everyday. We’ve been taught to numb out, to push through, to always be on the go go go. This ends NOW!
If you have ever felt like you meet a different version of yourself each day, you are going to learn why.
I want to teach you to embrace your cyclical nature because learning this has changed the way I work, for life. When you understand your own cyclical nature and actually embody it, it allows you to access the true power and strengths held within each of the four menstrual phases.
It’s time we start honouring the feminine flow and the cyclical nature of being a woman in business.
Understanding Our Cyclical Nature
As women we are cyclic beings, but we are deeply conditioned to show up in the same way as men, but men have a 24 hour hormonal cycle, in comparison we have a 28-35 day hormonal cycle.
Working in the corporate world Monday – Friday required an energetic consistency throughout the month. Upon reflection, even without knowing or understanding my cyclic nature, my energy back in the corporate world would be super productive around the ovulation phase of my cycle but on the other two weeks it really dipped.
The almost monthly burnout occurrence would often occur in the week of or just prior to my menstrual cycle, so looking back now my body was screaming at me to slow down all along. But every month I would go against that internal voice and keep pushing through.
A woman is like 30 different versions of herself every month and yet we are fearful to slow down, fearful to rest to honour our bodies and our emotions. Restoring your own harmonious relationship with your inner cycle ripples out to every other aspect of your life, relationships, money, your body – think weight loss, deeper sleep, lower anxiety/stress. When we restore our vitality, while for some this can take a little while, consider this the initiation you never had to a lifelong journey to deeply honouring your womanhood.
The problem with how women are taught (or not taught) is that men have a 24 hour cycle. Everyday they wake up, and get to do the same thing over and over again, without getting burnt out. This is true for business, nutrition, lifestyle, movement, self care; they wake up and get that fresh start.
As women, our cycle occurs over a much longer period of time and we have different internal processes going on including Menstruation and Ovulation. At different points in our cycle, our body requires a different lifestyle, food, and of course as women in business you will find that everyday is not the same. We go on a mental rollercoaster, we don’t actually realise how much our business is impacted by our cyclical nature.
We have a level of productivity that naturally thrives when we are in sync with our cycle. When we become deeply compassionate with our fluctuating moods, we tap into more energy and more productivity, simply by working in an energy giving way, rather than a depleting one.
On average, over the course of 28 days you enter four phases of your cycle, each holding different strengths and power that you can utilise when prioritising tasks for your business.
You have different strengths in scheduling, creating, executing and reflecting. You also have different needs. At different points in our cycle our body requires different support: I tend to focus on three key areas which are Self Care, Movement and Business. This also moves into things like nutrition.
The Phases Of Your Cycle
Each month our hormones are going in a cycle like a bell curve. At the lowest point we are bleeding. When the bell curve peaks, we’re ovulating and during our premenstrual it tailors back down. For men it’s like this flat line, they don’t have this full on fluctuation.
We experience the lowest level of hormones when we are bleeding and this is when we are the most yin in our energy as women. This is when our body is calling us to listen, to dip into the being state, to slow down. It’s like we are in our inner winter asking us to curl up with a book and hibernate.
When we are ovulating our hormones are at their peak, so this is when we are the most yang in our energy. We are naturally more outwardly and expressive with our energy. Our stamina is much higher, we can work longer hours, socialise, and in business this is a great time to launch, go live, or run events to capitalise on this natural high.
Here is an outline of each of the four phases. Keep in mind that every woman is different in terms of how long they spend in each phase and how they experience them so it’s important to tune into your body to understand your own unique flow.
Menstrual Phase (Winter) Days 1-7
Follicular Phase (Spring) Days 7-14
Ovulation Phase (Summer) Days 14-21
Luteal Phase (Autumn) Days 21-28
Note: If you are not currently experiencing a regular cycle, are pregnant, breastfeeding or post menopause you still move through these cycles and I would recommend looking to the moon. Most women sync to the moon’s cyclic nature in some way so considering the Full Moon as your Ovulation Phase and the New Moon as your Menstrual Phase would be a good place to start.
Working With Your Cyclical Nature
I’d love you to consider how you can consciously work with your menstrual cycle each month so you can ride that wave of yin and yang energy.
First step is starting to track your unique flow, so over the next 28 days, I want you to journal everyday to track how you are feeling, emotionally, physically and energetically. From this you’ll walk away with an understanding of ‘This is how I am’, ‘this is what I need’ the most during each phase, so you are really starting to become aware of your unique body.
After working with women for over a decade I see the patterns each woman moves through, I see the funky beliefs, anxiety, fear and self doubt bubble up at a certain time in each month, to the point where with my private clients I ask them directly where are you in your cycle as there are often times in the month where I and my clients feel the compulsive drive to burn everything down haha. I invite you to explore this deeper with me, Womb Wisdom is the like initiation into womanhood you never had.
